Welcome to the website of Alabama’s first legal AHA/BJCP sanctioned homebrew competition, the Alabama Brew-Off!

Alabama was the last state in the country to legalize homebrewing, but thanks to the efforts of Right to Brew HB9 was signed into law on May 9th, 2013 and this great hobby is now legal.

Birmingham Budweiser is the proud sponsor of the Alabama Brew-Off and will provide a cash prize of $1,000 to the winner of Best in Show, along with the opportunity for the winning beer to be brewed by a local commercial craft brewery.

Anyone interested in judging should contact Judge Director Tracy Hamilton by email at t_p_hamilton@yahoo.com. Judges may enter beers in the competition and bring their beers on the day of judging.

June 10th – Entries begin to be accepted at Birmingham Budweiser, 141 Industrial Dr., Birmingham, AL 35211
June 28th – Last day that entries are accepted, and deadline for online registration
July 13th – Judging takes place at Avondale Commerce Park
TBD shortly after judging – Winners will be announced.

Home brewing has long been a vibrant hobby in the state of Alabama. Unfortunately, until recently everyone participating in the hobby was considered a felon under Alabama law. While the law was seldom enforced, sporadic instances of enforcement made all the state’s home brewers nervous. After several years of grassroots effort, a ragtag group of home brewers calling themselves Right To Brew finally succeeded in getting a bill through the Alabama legislature in May of 2013. To celebrate this achievement and all brewing culture in Alabama, the Alabama Brew Off is being organized as the first legal home brewing competition in Alabama.

Alabama Brew Off is sponsored by Birmingham Budweiser, an independent, family-owned beer wholesaler offering great craft beer to the citizens of North Alabama. Birmingham Budweiser’s portfolio includes great local breweries like Cahaba Brewing, Back Forty Beer Company, and Beer Engingeers as well as national craft beer favorites like Great Divide, Avery Brewing, Green Flash, Ballast Point, Southern Tier, and many others.
